This is just the beginning of Mural Mania, it is going to catch on and our town is going to be nationally recognized soon.”

“I think your murals are fascinating.  I think your town looks beautiful.”

WXXI- PBS Rochester

“History is an endless story that has been told in many ways.  From oil traditions to written text and print.  But through all its forms it rarely has been told more vividly then through art.  In Lyons, N.Y. the members of Mural Mania understand this power.  They decided to revitalize the town and tell its history.”

Boaters from Maryland and Florida Memorial Day weekend 2007

“This is truly a national treasure and everyone needs to learn about this.  We just happened to pick up a copy of the Canal Times.  It had an article about the mural you are putting up and we just had to see it.   Seeing it in really life is amazing.  I think you have something special here and it really needs to be published.”

My name is Joe Petitti, from North Carolina.  “We are biking along the Erie Canal trail and the most fascinating thing we have seen are the murals along the way in each town.”

Dawn Jordan-Artist

“I think there is a new renaissance of art happening in our region.  We have this great wealth of history in central, N.Y. on the Erie Canal.”

The Murals of Lyons, N.Y.

Canal Town

Located in South Side Park on the Erie Canal, behind Santelli Lumber Co., it was painted in 1990 by Andy Miller, sponsored by E.R.I.E. (Erie Restoration Interests Everyone.) This Three paneled mural shows the first settlers in Lyons, the Town Clock and the Aqueduct removed in 1969. (This mural was painted over with volunteers in the 2009.)

Winston's Dream-June 2007

Mounted on the old trolley bed abutment in the newly dedicated G. Winston Dobbins Memorial Park, at Lock 27, this duplicates a scene from an actual post card from 1910.  It’s complete with packet boat, mules, hogies, a trolley, and the famous Hotchkiss Peppermint building.  The mural was created by James Zeger.

Generations-July 2007

The former plain façade of Dobbins Drug Store and The Olde Pharmacy Gift Shop is now Generations .  Impressed by Corky and Chips' unique artistic techniques and abilities, pharmacist Sean Dobbins commissioned them to create a permanent tribute to his heritage.   The viewer looks through a 3-D "window" into an old fashioned apothecary starring his grandfather, founder Bill Dobbins, his father, G Winston Dobbins, who continued the family tradition, and Sean himself, as a child, now a third generation Dobbins' pharmacist.

Generations of Smiles August 2007

Dr. Randy Mitchell, an intense local history supporter, was impressed by the work that artists Corky Goss and Chip Miller were completing across the street, so he commissioned them to transform the alley-way wall of his dental office.   As expected from these inspiring muralists, the resulting art renders the viewer awestruck.  Named Generations of Smiles , paint records the heritage of dentistry in Lyons, especially memorializing Dr. Arthur Santelli, well-respected dentist and local resident who first practiced on that site.  Dr. Santelli himself presides over the old-fashioned dental chair.   The creativity of the painters illustrates how dentistry has changed over the years.

Street of Dreams September 2007

This talented young artist  James Zeger has completed his second mural in less than a year.  His goal was to depict downtown Lyons, specifically William Street, circa 1910.   Having no set design in mind, he studied a variety of historical media.  His sources included collections of original postcards, books about Lyons, and the photo bank of the Lyons Civic Club.
The inclusion of the trolley, horse and buggy, and early automobile subtly reminds us that this was a very important time in history; the world was becoming modern, but the old way of life still was present.   The people in this "tapestry" represent real citizens,  who paved the way for Lyons to be the County Seat as well as the center of activity of Wayne County.   Amazingly, the art appreciator gets a two for one; in order to look upon the scene from 1910, one must view the very same street, exactly as it is in real time.   The comparison provides a memorable history lesson.

Knowledge, Beauty and Wisdom-August 2008

 Peppermint Mural

Dawn Jordan just added this lovely mural of the Peppermint Industry that shows how Peppermint was harvested, distilled. bottled and shipped on the Erie Canal.  This mural is on the side loading dock of the H.G. Hotchkiss Building. The mural was completed during the summer of 2009.  This mural is on the corner of Water Street and Leach Rd.  www.streetsmartart.com

Steamer Hose Number 2

This mural is dedicated to all the fireman who have protected the citizens of Lyons through the years.  This mural shows a 1936 Fire truck parked  in the garage.  This mural was painted and dedicated in October of 2009 and is part of the revitalization of  The Centre Block.  This mural was painted my Maria Hoover.

From cave painting to art indigenous to other cultures we find out much about who they are or were. Art often depicts everyday life to be enjoyed by those in a community. In fact anthropology and other disciplines studying other cultures rely strongly on their art form. It seems everyone expresses something using community art.

"I think the best part will be when it gets put up," said LaChanda   Mills, a Lyons junior who hopes to return next week to  continue working on the mural.  She believes it will help people appreciate the community's history. "And it brings us together because you have a lot of different generations here working on it," she said.

How refreshing to see a mural!  A mural showing life at an earlier time.  A mural celebrating life in a contemporary time.  A mural that shares with us, as an alternative, to forcing us to either buy or act upon suggested urges
